When It All Comes Down
- Track by Track
Track 1 – Best of Your Life (Amber Lawrence / Rodney Auld)
Best of your life is a song that says “no matter where you are in your life now, you can always start again tomorrow” – it’s never too late to have the life you want. I wrote this song at the Mushroom Music writer’s camp with Rodney Auld from band ‘Jonah’s Road’. Rod and I sat in a little room, and tried to brainstorm for song ideas – I flicked through my idea’s book and found written on a blank page “what if the best of your life is the rest of your life?” so we went from there and came up with a really beautiful song.
Track 2 – Don’t Do Lonely Well (Amber Lawrence / Clive Young)
Are you like me? When your partner goes away for work, or with his mates, you think they’re just having too much fun? And so you badger them with phone calls and messages just because you want to know what’s going on!! This song was written in Melbourne, and started with the very cool line “hello it’s me again!”…sometimes love drives you to make too many phone calls!
Track 3 – Breathing Still (Amber Lawrence)
This is one of my favourite songs on the album. Have you ever hit your shin on the corner of the bed - doesn’t it hurt! So in this song, I’ve asked the question whether the pain of a lost love will ever go – and in doing so I’ve mentioned a few of those painful moments like slamming your finger in the car, hitting your shin and a few more, it’s got a nice bluegrass John Mayer vibe to it.
Track 4 – Out of My Life (Amber Lawrence / Aaron Pye)
This song is part truth, part poetic license. It tells the story of a girl sitting at the back of the church while “the love of her life” walks down the aisle with someone else. Though it sounds like a tragedy, the song is a tongue-in-cheek look at that unusual event – would you really go to the wedding or charge your glass to the happy couple?
Track 5 – Song to Self (Amber Lawrence / )
This is the first 6/8 feel song I’ve ever recorded. I had the phrase “it’s hard not to be hard on yourself” floating around in my head for ages. So I took the idea to my wonderful writing friend, , and we turned it into a real gem, a song about believing in yourself, but more importantly a song about giving yourself a break sometimes, and not being so hard on yourself.
Track 6 – Women Like Me (Don’t Like Girls Like You) (Amber Lawrence)
This song really does need no introduction. It’s a killer song to play live – and the production has left this song as a rollicking rockabilly tune. I love it! It’s a song written from life experience about that one girl we all know!
Track 7 – Wrecking Ball (Amber Lawrence / Sam Hawksley)
This song was written with Sam Hawksley, who came over for a song writing session and decided that I needed a song that the band could rock out in on stage. We certainly achieved that with this song! I can’t wait to sing it on a big stage!
Track 8 – When it All Comes Down (Amber Lawrence)
This is the title track of the album, and the most truthful and heartfelt song on the album. This song asks some pretty hard questions about what life is all about. I wrote this song last year, as I spent the most part of 2008 walking Corridor 10 of the Prince of Wales hospital – visiting my dad as he battled Leukaemia.
Although we lost my Dad, the song has a happy ending – answering what my family and I found out to be the meaning of 2008 – that “When it all comes down to it….it all comes down to Love”.
Track 9 – The Good Men (Amber Lawrence)
This is a song for all the men out there who do so much for us girls! For example, giving us piggy backs when our feet hurt at 3am, fixing things, and telling us we look good no matter what. It’s got a classic Alan Jackson feel to it. And finally I have a song for the boys!
Track 10 – Always Kiss Me Goodnight (Amber Lawrence / Aaron Pye / Scott Greenaway)
I wrote this song with Aaron Pye and Scott Greenaway. Before the songwriting session I’d been shopping and purchased a sign to hang in my living room that read “Always Kiss Me Goodnight”. So as we thought about what to write about, I looked up at the sign and knew that “Always Kiss Me Goodnight” had to be the title of the song. But instead of writing a song about a couple, we wrote the song about fathers and daughters. Particularly about my Dad and I, and how important that goodnight kiss is – especially when I said goodnight for the last time in September 2008.
Track 11 – The First Time (Amber Lawrence / Brooke McClymont)
The first time is a love song. A love song about young love down by the shore, and falling in love for the first time. I had most of this song written, but just couldn’t nail the chorus – so who you gonna call? Brooke McClymont! Brooke came around to my place and we finished the song in an hour. It’s a gorgeous song that lets you reminisce about summer love.
Track 12 – You Say (Amber Lawrence)
This is fun song. It’s very tongue in cheek and a little bit risqué’ about all the promises one man makes, and about me not believing the things he says until I see it. It’s country through and through, and is so much fun to sing live!
